SLS

WHAT IS IT? WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AVOIDING IT? JOIN THE DEBATE HERE

SLS is the standard abbreviation for sulphate based "surfactants" which make  products  foam ie. Sodium lauryl sulfate, Sodium laureth sulfate. These are corrosive in their action, stripping skin of grease and dirt, yes, but also the skin's natural oils.

At Naked we've never used SLS and we've launched our new products using Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate which sounds like SLS but isn't! It behaves very differently from sulphate surfactants, as sarcosinates are derived from amino acids which are proteins. Sarcosinates are much milder that the traditional SLS and SLES ( sulphate ) surfactants and this is well documented, with Sarcosinates having been used in the better baby skincare brands  for a long time.

In a nutshell, we've found that opting for the milder detergents benefits the skin so much - it becomes less dry and itchy and little skin imperfections like pimply arms simply disappear! Because sulphates are in pretty much everything you wash with, we believe it's good to provide the option for people to buy products without them.  The results speak for themselves too!

Biodegradable Products?

We are often asked if Naked products are readily biodegradable. Click here for our latest thinking........

We have not found a concrete criteria yet to claim that a toiletry product is wholly biodegradable  ie. there is no foolproof method for measuring a 100% degradation as only the individual ingredients which make up the whole are usually tested for this. Where combinations of ingredients in a finished product are tested they only have to degrade by 60% within 28 days to claim biodegradable status.

An average 97% of Naked ingredients are from natural origins ( some achieve 99.5% )  and we  avoid synthetic colourants wherever we can ( only 1 product in our range Coco de Mer has one colourant ), hormone mimickers like phthalates and parabens ( not good in the water supply ) and petrochemicals like mineral  and paraffinum distilled from oil. The small amounts of EDTA we use in some products are also the biodegradeable type so we believe that Naked is more biodegradable than some widely used brands for these reasons.

Are you itching for some fragrance?

Many people who suffer with sensitive skin believe they have to use products which are totally fragrance free. However, we are finding this is not always the case and if you can find products which are free from harsh ingredients such as SLS, parabens and petrochemicals, it may well be that you can come up smelling of roses once again!

We want to be 100% honest with you –some fragrances just cannot be achieved without a little help, so not all of our products are totally free from synthetic fragrance. However, all of our products are free from SLS, parabens and petrochemicals as well as phthalates (used by many brands to help prolong a fragrance) – we believe it is these ingredients that are often the cause of sensitive skin, rather than the fragrance itself, and we dearly wanted Naked to smell fabulous.

Here are the Naked products containing  100% natural fragrances:

Starflower Undressed  Foam Bath

Starflower Stark Naked Body Wash

Starflower Stark Naked Hand Wash

Rose With No Clothes Body Cream

Rose With No Clothes Face Wash

White Ginger Laid Bare Body Wash

Rice Revealed Bath Essence

Rice In the Buff Body Wash

Cocoa Butter Revealed Body Cream

Angelica In the Altogether Foam Bath

Where we have been unable to produce an individual fragrance using only essential oils, we have used nature identical compounds and teeny tiny amounts of synthetics ( eg. 0.01% of a fragrance may be synthetic yet that fragrance itself may only be included at 0.4% of the total volume of the entire product) and therefore all of our products are on average 97% naturally derived (that’s 97% of the whole product).

We have had lots of feedback from people who haven’t been able to use a fragranced product in years and who are now luxuriating in delicious, heady scents once again:

“I'm allergic to a lot of synthetic scents, the SLS, SLES, etc, and I've been struggling to find things I can use for the last few years. There's nothing less feminine than feeling like you can't use anything that smells good, that you're only able to use unscented, specialist products, or that you can't have an extra splosh of product to spoil yourself, because they cost so much. I discovered your range and it has been worth the wait. Everything so far has been wonderful. It’s so lovely to have a choice again.“

Let us know how sensitive you are today.
