Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We all know the saying, but new research has discovered that there could actually be some truth in it—researchers at New York University found that aesthetic judgements for works of art are highly individual, and there’s no reason to suggest that the same forces aren’t in play when it comes to the beauty of the human form.

In the study, participants were shown 109 different works of art from different cultures, styles and time periods, with blood flow to the brain being monitored to determine which areas became stimulated. It was found that although the same part of the brain was activated by everyone witnessing the works of art, the specific part activated by aesthetic appeal was highly dependent on personal opinion. By looking at the combination of brain scans and the participants’ individual ratings of each picture, the researchers noticed that the emotional responses differed widely—whereas one person might find a particular work of art to be incredibly moving and emotional, another wouldn’t experience the same kind of response at all.

The study confirms the opinion that beauty is subjective, with everyone having different ideas of what’s beautiful and what isn’t. It certainly goes some way to explaining why that actor you find gorgeous happens to repulse your best friend—it’s all down to personal opinion, and that means that everyone is truly beautiful. But, it doesn’t mean you can’t buck the odds in your favour a little bit. Beauty may lie in the eye of the beholder but if you really want to dazzle him then you can’t go wrong with a bit of prep work, so make sure to keep your Naked stash up to date and you’ll have everything you need to take his breath away.
